Federal Government College, Odi is one of the 18 new Federal Colleges established in 1990 as necessitated by the creation of six more states including Bayelsa IN 1996 by Abacha’s Administration.

This is part of government policy of siting, at least two Federal Colleges in every State.

The college inherited the site of an existing State Government Secondary School, but could not meet the target take-off date 2000 due to delay in the award of contracts for site rehabilitation arising from the crisis situation on November,1999 in the area.

In addition to the usual initial problems of a new institution, F.G.C Odi faced numerous peculiar handicaps; extensively vandalized infrastructural facilities enveloped in tall grass and luxuriant vegetation, there were no habitable hostel, no stable classrooms, no staff quarters and no single utility vehicle.

The situation was so bad that the first set of 18 teachers posted to the college resented the posting and all got reposted to other colleges. Faced with the possibility of losing a whole session,Odi Central Committee rallied round, giving material and moral support in the area of site clearing.

Odi Local Government Council complemented the effort by extending electricity to the college compound. Encourage by the above positive gestures large multi-purpose building originally designed as kitchen/dining hall was renovated.

This single structure provided the enabling environment to commence academic activities.

The College took-off in May 26,2006 with a student enrolment of 23(18boys and 5 girls).

The pioneer staff were Mr. D.O Ogounga as the principal and Mr. M.D Bassey as Burser. Four teachers were engage on part-time basis to teach some basic subjects, namely: English, Mathematics, Social Studies,Integrated Science and Business Studies. By June,2000, the college was fortunate to receive 20 new officers and in February 2001,two Vice-Principal Mr.I.N Akanno and Mrs C.I. Nwobu joined the staff of the college. With these developments, the seemingly hopeless situation is now history.

Today, a 3 Km drive from the East –West junction between Kaiama and sagbama, and further 200m main access road on the left will welcome you to a magnificent gate, wherein lies an impressive college compound and a sizeable number of staff and students continuously bubbling with academic and co-curricular activities.

Today, FGC,Odi boasts of a staff population of 37 permanent members of staff, 35 non-teaching staff and 17 NYSC members. The student enrolment stands at 790. It is hoped that with improvement in infrastructure, the population will grow and the school will move to greater heights both academically and in every wise.

Long live FGC, Odi! Long live Federal Ministry of Education! Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
